A tough uphill ITT!
Kasia Niewiadoma maintained her second position in the general classification (GC) after today’s stage six at the Giro Rosa. The uphill individual time trial (ITT) stage was won by Annemiek van Vleuten (MTS) with Niewiadoma finishing in sixth place.
As the ten-day stage race passes the halfway point, Niewiadoma is +4:17 minutes in the GC, with Anna van der Breggen (DLT) on the same time in third. Read the reactions from each of the CANYON//SRAM Racing riders after today’s 12.1km ITT stage.
Kasia Niewiadoma (6th):
“The ITT was obviously hard! I did my best, and was trying to ride smart and not to overdo it at the beginning in order to be able to really push hard at the end of the climb!”
“I definitely felt that I was missing some pure power on the flat sections or little downhills. It was somehow harder to push there on those sections compared to pushing up the climbs.”
Hannah Barnes (12th):
“I can be happy with how I did, especially after five hard days already. I had the option to take today steady but I wanted to test myself and see how I could do in a TT that was as demanding as today was. We are going into the next four days in a good position and we are motivated.”
Alena Amialiusik (16th):
“The ITT was good for me. After yesterday’s stage I lost a lot in GC because it wasn’t my best day. So, today’s plan was to go steady and not doing something crazy, I was controlling my pace to not go too deep and to prepare myself for the harder days that are in front of us.”
Omer Shapira (20th):
“Firstly, I’m quite happy with my performance. I don’t have a lot of experience in this discipline and I feel like I managed the stage well. I controlled my power the whole race. I went hard, but not so deep, and I have to say I quite enjoyed the stage. We have four tough days coming ahead and we want to achieve big things. We’re looking forward to tomorrow!”
Tiffany Cromwell (79th):
“The ITT was pretty straight forward for me. I treated it as a ‘semi recovery’ day as I’m not chasing GC and I know the hard work that is coming for the next days to help support the girls and Kasia for the GC. The aim was to just ride it steady tempo and make time cut. I enjoyed the views and got myself to the finish. I’m sure my day was not as hard as some of the others.”
Alexis Ryan (116th):
“I used the TT as a recovery day. I rode a steady rhythm the whole way. I’ll be fresh for tomorrow and the racing action!”
Tomorrow’s seventh stage will be 127.8km from Cornedo Vicentino to Fara Vicentino and Tiffany Cromwell is predicting a fast-paced day.
“Tomorrow I think will be tough. It’s quite an up and down day with a few climbs. The climbs aren’t crazy hard, but will still hurt and can make for some very good racing. There’s the potential also for another breakaway day after the last couple of hard GC days. Let’s see!” commented Cromwell.
