Alena 6th in Flanders
Alena Amialiusik sprinted to sixth place in yesterday’s Ronde van Vlaanderen in Oudenaarde, Belgium. The race was won by Chantal van den Broek-Black (DLT) after a solo attack on the Oude Kwaremont.
Alena, earlier in a breakaway, was dropped from the leaders on the penultimate Oude Kwaremont climb but fought back to the chase group with two kilometres to go, putting herself into contention for the remaining podium places.
“I’m really happy with how I raced and how our team raced. In one moment on the second last climb I was dropped which made me a bit upset,” described Alena directly after the finish.
“I said okay, now I need to fight until the end as I have nothing to lose. Our chase group of four riders caught the next group with only around 2.5km to go. Then, it was time to show my sprinting skills,” joked Alena.
“I took a good wheel for the sprint, but then the real sprinting game started and they tried to push me around. To get sixth is good. You know, when you’re close to the podium, it makes you feel like you want to be there and maybe not so pleased with sixth place. But I’m really happy with my result and how we raced,” added Alena.
