AMSTEL GOLD KICKS OFF THE ARDENNES CLASSICS
CANYON//SRAM Racing moves from cobbles to bergs as it takes on the first of three Ardennes Classics, the Amstel Gold Race, Sunday, April 14. It’s a double Sunday of racing as our development team, CANYON//SRAM Generation, lines up at Grand Prix Chambéry in France.
The team’s roster for the Amstel Gold Race is Ricarda Bauernfeind, Neve Bradbury, Elise Chabbey, Tiffany Cromwell, Kasia Niewiadoma and Soraya Paladin.
The 157.8km race starts in Maastricht and winds through the undulating terrain of the Limburg region in the corner of the Netherlands. The World Tour course is renowned for its short, punchy climbs—all twenty-one of them. After around 80km of racing, the peloton start four circuits around Berg en Terblijt with a constant tempo of climbs from the Geulhemmerberg to the Bemelerberg to the Cauberg on repeat.
A slight change to the parcours in the final lap sees a new approach into Valkenburg ahead of the fifth and final ascent of the famed Cauberg slopes. The Amstel Gold Race promises a nail-biting finish that is, almost always, decided by just a few metres or a handful of seconds.
RIDER QUOTES
Kasia Niewiadoma: “My recovery after Flanders went well. I took some extra time after the brutal race and cold weather to make sure I recovered properly and resumed my final preparations for the Ardennes Classics as I wanted.”
“These three upcoming Ardennes Classics races are very important to me. They are the races and terrain where my strengths benefit me the most.”
“I know the Amstel course well. I’ve raced and trained on it multiple times over the years. The Cauberg is a climb that I started my professional career on, so I have special feelings for the circuit and the final climb.”
“I am going into the race with one goal—to win. I have had enough time to re-analyse my strengths between Flanders and Amstel. I feel confident going into Sunday.”
