Champion of the world
Pauline Ferrand-Prévot dominated the women’s elite XCO world championship race today, winning by more than three minutes to her nearest rival. The defending world champion led from start to finish to win the XCO world championship for the third time in her career. The silver and bronze medals went to Eva Lechner (ITA) and Rebecca McConnell (AUS) respectively in a sprint finish.
“I’m so happy! I feel great,” exclaimed Pauline after her win.
The CANYON//SRAM Racing rider established an 11 second lead on the start lap and extended it by around 30 seconds on each of the five full laps, to finish 3 minutes and 1 second ahead of the other medallists.
“I wanted to go out hard and get the lead as soon as possible because I knew it’s better to be alone on the uphill and downhill sections than in a group. I didn’t expect to have such a lead. It was an amazing race for me.”
Pauline continued, “The gap helped me keep my rhythm. I could stay calm and ride my pace. I felt some extra security because you never know if you have a crash or mechanical. The course was difficult, but I got through it without any problems at all. I have to say thanks to my team, my mechanic, and especially all of the equipment partners. I’m very pleased with the support they give me. Everything worked perfect today! ”
“This victory is great. To go into a race wearing the rainbow jersey and to be able to defend it, it’s such a special feeling. It’s incredible” smiled Pauline.
After achieving one of her 2020 season goals, a world championship win, the 28 year old now looks to her second goal of the season in just a few days. Pauline will compete at the European MTB Championships in Monte Tamaro, Switzerland from 15 to 18 October.
“Worlds, Europeans and Olympics are the three most important titles in your careers. This gives me confidence for next weekend, and I hope that I can keep my good form” added Pauline.
