ZOE WINS CYCLO-CROSS GULLEGEM
Zoe Bäckstedt stormed to victory at today’s Cyclo-cross Gullegem in Belgium. The conditions were brutally muddy after heavy rain the day before. Zoe was in a three-rider move from early in the race, and the lead changed several times. With two laps remaining Zoe seized an opportunity and created a gap that she was able to hold and extend in the final moments.
“I really enjoyed that. That was one of the most fun races I’ve done this year. I’m head to toe in mud and that’s part of the sport I love. I was at the front of the bike race and we were battling it out with three of us always having someone different at the front on every straight. I decided to attack with two laps to go.”
“I saw Manon looking down at the pedals and I thought okay she’s not watching what’s going on, so I went for it. I had a little gap and then it was trying to not any mistakes. My legs felt good today. I changed bikes every time because it felt right to me. It was just as slow to go through the race line or the pit lane. It also made the bike lighter to run with. I’m really happy to get the victory!”
Zoe will race tomorrow’s round #12 of the World Cup in Zonhoven, Belgium.
