Lisa Brennauer has finished fifth in the general classification after the final stage of the Lotto Belgium Tour in Geraardsbergen. A solo attack from Annemiek van Vleuten (Netherland National Team) saw her takeover the GC win from Marianne Vos (RLT) and Lucinda Brand (RLT). It was an exciting finale to the four day stage race, that finished with two small local circuits around Geraardsbergen. The two laps included the cobbled climbs of the Muur van Geraardsbergen and Bosberg that have previously been the final climbs of the Ronde van Vlaanderen course until 2011.
Brennauer was in a small leading group after the second time up the Muur. The group brought back Elisa Longo Borghini but were unable to catch van Vleuten. In the final kilometres the first and second chase groups came together and Brennauer finished 11th on the stage. “I wasn’t feeling great at the first part of the stage but once we arrived to the Muur then I realised that I am still feeling okay. I was right there and still with Annemiek when she went, but then on the last part of the Muur I couldn’t go with her and she just went away.”
The team next races the invitational ITT Chrono Champenois in France on Sunday 11 September.
