The final GC shake up
– Kasia Niewiadoma was CANYON//SRAM Racing’s best placed rider in yesterday’s stage nine of the Giro Rosa Iccrea when she finished in nineteenth position. In the final mountain stage, with a finish on top of the tough Malta Malgosia climb, the stage win went to Anna van der Breggen (DLT) ahead of overall tour leader Annemiek van Vleuten (MTS).
It was a stage that saw a general classification (GC) shake up, with Niewiadoma now sixth on GC ahead of today’s final stage from San Vito al Tagliamento to Udine, Italy.
Hannah Barnes was in the main break of the day for CANYON//SRAM Racing, but the British rider and her breakaway companions were caught with around 19km to go, and before the remnants of the peloton hit the slopes of the final climb.
“The stage was going well for us until the climb started. We had Hannah in the break of the day, which was great and gave hope that we have one teammate for later on in the climb, to give Kasia some support and help. But that break came back earlier then we had wanted,” said Team Manager and Sports Director, Ronny Lauke.
“When the final climb started Kasia was immediately on the limit and she suffered hard to stay with the main group. When the climb started to reach it’s steep gradients Kasia couldn’t maintain contact. She was fighting hard, suffering deep and giving her all. It’s all we could ask for and was all she could do, but she was empty,” added Lauke.
Today’s final 120km stage finishes in the home region of Elena Cecchini. The final and flattest stage of the Giro Rosa Iccrea, adds a cobbled stone climb at the end to finish in the grounds of Castle of Udine.
